Morecambe Winter Gardens painting marks 125 years of theater

Heysham-based artist Patricia Haskey was commissioned by Professor Vanessa Toulmin, chair of the Winter Gardens Preservation Trust, to produce the painting, which focuses on the recently restored interior rather than the exterior, which has been painted several times.

This commission was ideal for Patricia, whose portfolio includes many paintings capturing details in the architecture and form of buildings in Lancaster and Morecambe. It is also known for its locally and nationally exhibited landscapes and cityscapes.

“I have been working on the project since May – first sketch in situ, which left me in awe of the intricacy and beauty of the architectural detail, and admiration for the team of volunteers dedicated to restoring the theatre”, said Patricia, who has been a professional artist since 1980.

Although Professor Toulmin owns the original painting, a life-size print will be displayed in the theater and limited edition prints will be made to raise funds for the Winter Gardens.

The painting is the latest in a series of celebrations marking the theatre’s 125th anniversary, including a visit from Prince Charles in July.

The original painting will launch at the theater on September 3 when hosting the Makers Market as part of the Vintage by the Sea Festival.

Limited edition prints of the painting will go on sale from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. with a donation to the Winter Gardens for each print sold.
