Architects have always been called upon to breathe new life into old architecture inherited from the past or into historical artefacts – often monumental – which no longer meet the uses and needs of contemporary society.

Nevertheless, the old architecture tells our stories and therefore deserves to be restored with interventions that bring a touch of modernity and show the trace of design activity. YA Academy‘s course in “Architecture for heritagewas created in these premises. Its objective is to train designers capable of understanding and valuing the memory of historical architecture and of drawing inspiration from it to carry out new interventions that meet new needs and enrich themselves with the link to the past. In a close dialogue between old and new, between existing architectures and new interventions, it is possible to understand what has been and what is now, redrawing – through architecture – a historical line intended to be continued by future generations.

Students will learn about the most advanced surveying strategies and the redesign of historical architectures. This will allow them to protect ancient built marvels without giving up a contemporary approach to the project. They will gain skills and experience in a field of design that is ever-present and offers ongoing and valuable employment opportunities.

Students will analyze the technical and compositional strategies to be adopted in contexts that host exceptional existing architectures through the intervention on archaeological and industrial sites and focusing primarily on the accommodation and cultural use of historic buildings. The course will consist of 86 hours of lectures, a 32 hour workshop and multiple lectures given by renowned professional architects.

At the end of the course, the YACademy placement office will guarantee each student an internship/collaboration proposal within the partner studios.

Workshop

DESIGN OF A RECEPTION CENTER IN THE RUINS OF THE PRIORY OF ATHASSEL

Valerie Mulvin | MCCULLOUGH MULVIN ARCHITECTS

The course workshop will take place under the supervision of McCullough Mulvin Architects. This will involve designing a visitor center in the ruins of the Priory of Athassel, a Norman monastic complex listed among the most emblematic ruins in southern Ireland. Immersed in idyllic countryside and crystallized in ruins for more than 700 years, the priory is certainly the ideal context to measure the relationship between antiquity and contemporary architecture. The uncertain enclosure walls, the open aisles, the open Gothic pointed arches, the abandoned cloisters, represent a rare and charming opportunity to experiment with contemporary languages and architectures capable of a unique expressiveness both technically only in terms of composition. A museum space, a cafeteria, a bookstore, a conference space or even housing scattered in the countryside and the ruins will be the suggestive elements of a program capable of generating new experiences and perceptions of historic architecture, while respecting a formula consistent with the Irish spirit: reserved and deeply deferential to its ruins.

Build your project

Over the past few years, many YACademy student projects have been completed. For this reason, from 2022, students will systematically have the possibility of participating in an additional educational stage: the production of what they have designed during the workshop phase. Construction is an important step in architecture, which is why the YACademy offers its students the opportunity to participate in the process of producing their ideas. Students will gain hands-on, on-site experiences and additionally, ownership of projects built for great clients, destined for media attention and capable of being a game-changer in their professional careers.
