FAYETTE – On November 11 at 7:00 p.m., the Bean Creek Valley History Center will sponsor a barn painting demonstration by Robert Kroeger, and a meet and greet with the author and signature of the recently published book, “Historic Barns of Ohio”, by Ãditions Arcadie . The event takes place at the Fayette Opera House, 105 E. Main Street, Fayette.
Kroeger will demonstrate his painting technique of using palette knives and impasto to paint an old barn. He will also share stories about some of the barns he painted, tips on how to determine the age of a barn, and other interesting information.
Kroeger is originally from Youngstown, graduated from the College of Dentistry at Ohio State University, and served in the US Navy. He is a second generation artist, although unlike his father, he did not start painting full time until he retired.
He chose barn architecture from bygone eras. From the northwest flattened by glaciers to the Appalachian hills and valleys.
The barns were the center of the farms, built with wooden nails and tenon-mortise joints and assembled with beams hand-hewn from nearby trees; some of these structures have witnessed three centuries. Many of them display the magnificent craftsmanship of master barn builders, including wood spikes and two-inch tongue-and-groove floors. Unfortunately, many of these barns collapsed and many more were replaced by the new metal barns of today.
Kroeger traveled all 88 counties in Ohio and even out of state to find beautiful dilapidated barns so he could write a barn essay to preserve Ohio history.
The public is invited to visit the artist and purchase an autographed book from various old barns in the 88 counties. Light refreshments will be served. Call 419-388-3518 to reserve tickets.
