The other judges are Toyin Adewale-Gabriel and Dike Chukwumerije. Adewale-Gabriel is a poet and fiction writer. Dike Chukwumerije is an award-winning spoken and performance poet and author.
The judges described the long list of eleven as the best of contemporary Nigerian poetry, rich in experimentation with language, style and theme.
Accepting the recommended long list, the Advisory Board commended the careful work carried out by the judges. Reacting on behalf of the Council, Professor Akachi Adimora-Ezeigbo, the Chairman, said the quality of work in the list shows that a lot of consideration and work has gone into selecting deserving poets who have distinguished themselves through quality of their submissions.
Judges will also continue to adjudicate on the 87 entries for the Nigerian Critics Award, which runs concurrently with the Nigerian Literature Award. The Literary Critics Award has a monetary value of 1 Million Naira.
The Nigerian Literature Prize rotates between four literary categories every year – prose fiction, poetry, drama and children’s literature.
A shortlist of three is expected in September. The advisory committee, if any, will announce a winner in October.
